Solid Waste Management

Solid Waste Management

Since Brickhouse Environmental was first incorporated in 1977, the company has provided field services, design engineering, construction management, and regulatory negotiations to the solid waste community. Throughout that time, as the public’s awareness of the importance of protecting the environment resulted in the overhaul of solid waste regulations, Brickhouse Environmental stayed at the forefront, adjusting our approach, personnel, and technology to meet the changing demand for our expertise. Brickhouse Environmental is an active member of the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA), Pennsylvania Waste Industries Association (PWIA), and the Maryland/Delaware Solid Waste Association.

Landfill Sitting, Design and Permitting

While Brickhouse Environmental provides quality engineering and consulting services in three core business areas, our longest and most consistent area of business has been in solid waste management. All of our engineers and senior scientists have hands-on experience in landfill operations and construction, as well as detailed design. This strong background in landfill operations and construction management brings an insider’s perspective to the operational considerations that are critical to successful landfill designs. While the ultimate goal of landfill design is to protect the environment, we also understand that landfills are in a competitive business. Each of our designs consider the benefits of maximizing capacity versus capital and operational costs.

Transfer Station Design and Permitting

Brickhouse Environmental’s innovative designs in leachate re-circulation, liner technology, and final cover and capping have consistently demonstrated that there are always more practical, less expensive alternatives to the design, permitting and expansion of today’s modern landfill and transfer station than clients had expected before consulting us. Our comprehensive permitting services include filing initial applications, submitting re-applications and securing permit modifications. The company takes a full-service approach, guiding clients from site identification through liner design, securing needed permits, construction management, designing a cap when the landfill has finished its work, and securing closure permits.

Landfill Construction Management and Certification

Brickhouse Environmental has provided construction management and engineer certification on various Landfill facilities in the southeast Pennsylvania region. We have the ability to assist with the management, coordination, and certification of annual construction activities. Our innovative designs in leachate recirculation, liner technology, and capping alternatives have consistently demonstrated that there are always more practical, less expensive alternatives to the design and operations of today’s modern landfill.

Landfill Compliance Monitoring

Brickhouse Environmental’s experience in landfill/solid waste projects includes groundwater and gas monitoring, leachate characterization for treatment design, geologic/hydrogeologic investigations, radiation monitoring, stormwater sampling, landfill gas-to-energy systems, permitting, and landfill design. Field services play a large part in our projects, and our staff has provided compliance monitoring and database management for almost all of our landfill/solid waste clients, as well as for many industrial clients. Aside from field investigation, we maintain an active involvement in the full spectrum of waste management related issues. Our goal is to provide our clients with environmentally sound, cost-effective alternatives for landfill design and operation.

Regulated Fill Management

Brickhouse Environmental has successfully assisted clients in permitting and managing the beneficial use of regulated fill as construction materials on non-residential Brownfield sites. The procedure includes finding sources suitable to the project and identifying the material category, and then performing sampling and analysis based upon the identified category and associated regulatory guidelines. We can assists with demonstrating fill attainment of statewide health standards, completing and submitting applications for regulatory approval, and develop an agency approved construction management tracking program for regulated fill delivery, acceptance, and placement documentation/reporting. Brickhouse Environmental’s innovative designs in capping alternatives and permitting of clean fill/regulated fill facilities have consistently demonstrated that there are always more practical, less expensive alternatives to the design and operations of today’s modern facilities.
